The Place des Terreaux brings together several of these: here you will find the Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des Beaux-Arts), the Bartholdi fountain, the town hall and many nice restaurants, bars and shops. By day, Place des Terreaux is dynamic and picturesque, being close to rue de la Republique with its many shops. At night, the square is nicely illuminated.
The Musee des Beaux-Arts has the second largest art collection in France (after the Louvre), in an imposing 17th century building (named the Palais Saint-Pierre). At the Museum of Fine Arts, you can admire the works of famous painters such as Monet, Cezanne or Renoir.
Equally impressive is the Hotel de Ville de Lyon, listed as a historic monument, with its Baroque architectural style. Built in the 17th century, its famous facade was modified following a fire in 1674.
The Bartholdi fountain dates from the 19th century and its creator, whose name it bears, also designed the Statue of Liberty. The sculpture of the woman represents the Garonne, while the horses symbolize its four main tributaries.
A stone’s throw from the Place des Terreaux is the Place de la Comedie, a small pedestrian street between Hotel de Ville and the Opera de Lyon, which invites you to discover operas, ballet performances and concerts.
Another memorable monument of Lyon 1 is the Saint Nizier church, built between the 14th and 19th centuries, mostly in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The church is listed as a historical monument and its facade is often used as a support during the Fete des Lumieres.
